Since its establishment ESTSS has held seven European conferences on Traumatic Stress Studies. Conference sites include the Netherlands, Norway, France, Istanbul, Edinbourgh, Berlin and in 2005 Stockholm. European Conferences are held every two years with smaller thematic regional conferences taking place with greater regularity. For example, regional conferences over the last two years have been held in Milan and Paris.
The creation of a European Society was actively supported by the International Society of Traumatic stress Studies (ISTSS) as a means of enhancing a global view of trauma. The links between the two societies are strong as ESTSS Presidents automatically become ex-officio members of the ISTSS Board and former ESTSS Presidents become of the International Council of Past Presidents of Traumatic Stress Societies.
Thanks to a grant from the European Commission several ESTSS board members in conjunction with European trauma professionals drafted a blueprint of training standards in European psychotraumatology. As noted on the ESTSS website, ESTSS seeks to continue informing and influence policy decisions in respect of training requirements for professionals involved in the care of those subjected to traumatic stressors as well as standards of practice within centres of excellence.
ESTSS has a solid membership base and a society secretariat. Members receive the ESTSS Newsletter, including a members only section, and subscribe to the Journal of Traumatic Stress at a reduced rate. Members also benefit from lower conference registration fees for scientific meetings arranged by any of the international societies for traumatic stress studies. Preferential prices are available for the ESTSS series of books “European Perspectives on Psychotraumatology” published by Oxford University Press.
